Within the eight counties of Western New York, the Oishei Foundation is the largest foundation by total assets (more than $300 million), awarding 171 grants totaling over $20.6 million in 2013. Through the hard work and dedication of our staff, board and grantees, 60% of the population in WNY was directly affected by the Foundation’s grantmaking.
Strictly looking at Upstate New York, excluding New York City, the Oishei Foundation is the 3rd largest independent foundation by total asset size, trailing only The William and Sue Gross Family Foundation located in Albany, NY ($329.9M) and the Park Foundation, Inc. located in Ithaca, NY ($315.5M), ranked 35th and 38th respectively in New York State.
In New York State, The John R. Oishei Foundation ranks 42nd in total assets among all independent foundations. To put this number into perspective, 92% (46) of the Top 50 independent foundations in New York State reside in New York City, an indication of the concentration of wealth downstate and more importantly the limited philanthropic resources available to our region.
